Stony Brook Poetry Group

Meets every 2 weeks at the library. 
This newly forming group is for anyone who writes poetry and is serious about the craft.  It is for individuals who enjoy seeing the architecture, hearing the voice, sharing what is essential in a given poem.
The purpose of this group is to provide positive feedback as directed by each member/writer.  The suggested format is that each writer reads an original poem to the group and provides copies so that individuals can write comments and perhaps questions on the poem.
There will also be a writing prompt offered at each meeting and opportunities to discuss the creative process. Please bring the 5 copies of your poem to the meeting.

Poor Houses and Town Farms: the hard row for paupers

This is a NH Humanities Council Program. From its earliest settlements New Hampshire has struggled with issues surrounding the treatment of its poor. The early Northeastern colonies followed the lead of England’s 1601 Poor Law, which imposed compulsory taxes for maintenance of the poor but made no distinction between the "vagrant, vicious poor” and the helpless and honest poor. This confusion persisted for generations and led directly to establishment in most of the state’s towns of alms houses and poor farms and, later, county institutions which would collectively come to form a dark chapter in New Hampshire history. Steve Taylor will examine how paupers were treated in these facilities and how reformers eventually succeeded in closing them down.
